| A common motif in the Art Deco period was the 'ziggurat' - a stepped pyramid shape that invoked the Mayan empire in central America. Unlike the (more-or-less) smooth pyramids of ancient Egypt, the Mayan pyramids were a series of giant steps from base to apex. The ziggurat motif was everywhere in Deco times, but is often associated with the then-new 'skyscraper' buildings, such as New York's Empire State Building. In Patrick's DayNight mask, a stylised silver-grey ziggurat tower stands in both day and night - symbolic of the global enterprises that began in Art Deco times. |
| Descriptor: A small, papier maché decorative mask in contrasting blues with a central silver-grey skyscraper tower.
