Visitor

By Patrick Hughes (2003)

This papier mache mask depicts a visitor from another world. Its design evokes various 'sci-fi' figures, but also the Wanjina. The Wanjina are sprit beings in the cosmology of the Worrorra people of N-W Australia's Kimberley region. Patrick's mask evokes features common to various Wanjinas - the blank, staring eyes and the absence of a mouth; and the surrounding striped 'halo' or 'sunburst' evokes the ochre colours of the Kimberley region.
