This papier mache mask is inspired by Tutankhamun - the young pharaoh (king) of ancient Egypt. The pharaohs were regarded as the gods' representatives on earth, mediating between the mortal and divine worlds. When Western archeologists discovered Tutenkhamun's tomb in 1922, its contents triggered a fascination with 'Egyptiana' that became a major theme in the Art Deco movement of the 1920s and 1930s. Patrick's mask evokes the gold and lapis lazuli of the original mask of Tutankhamun.
