| Horus (2)
By Patrick Hughes (2002)
This papier mache mask is another inspired by Horus, the falcon-headed god in the cosmology of ancient Egypt.
Hailed as 'lord of the sky', Horus was linked with Mars, Jupiter and Saturn; and was believed to hold up the sun and the moon. Horus symbolised kingship's divine nature. Thus, each pharaoh was hailed as the 'living Horus', while his dead predecessor was identied with Osiris, Horus's father and guardian of the underworld.
In this Horus mask, Patrick combines a naturalistic falcon's head with decorative elements that, while abstract, evoke features of Egyption tomb paintings and hieroglyphcs.
