| Horus
By Patrick Hughes (2001)
This papier mache mask was inspired by Horus, the falcon-headed god in the cosmology of the ancient Egyptians. Horus was the son of Isis and Osiris (ruler of the dead) and the three together represent life after death and the defeat of evil. Hailed as 'lord of the sky', Horus was linked with Mars, Jupiter and Saturn; and was believed to hold up the sun and the moon.
Patrick's mask contrasts the hard, glossy surfaces of gold tomb decorations with the softness of feathers.
