Dewi Sri

By Patrick Hughes (2001)

The design of this papier mache mask evokes Dewi Sri, the rice goddess in Balinese cosmology. Rice is a staple food In Bali and growing it is a focus of rural life. No surprise, then, that Dewi Sri represents fertility and prosperity.

Patrick's mask combines several elements of Balinese life. Balinese women often wear colourful hibiscus blossoms in ceremonies; the (red and gold) volcanic holy mountain Gunung Agung is the origin of the rain that supports rich green tropical forests, then flows down to irrigate the rice terraces.
