Cili

By Patrick Hughes (2001)

The design of this papier mache mask is based on the Cili - a stylised female figure in Balinese cosmology. The Cili represents life and fertility and is often linked with Dewi Sri, Bali's rice goddess who personifies fertility and prosperity. Each village in Bali often has its own unique Cili design and Patrick's mask combines versions of features that would normally be found in separate designs such as the headdress, the earrings and the stylised form of the body.
