| Anubis
By Patrick Hughes (2002)
Dimensions: Approx. 48 cm long x 26 cm wide
This papier mache mask is inspired by Anubis, the jackal-headed god who guarded the burial grounds of ancient Egypt. Anubis brought the dead before Osiris - the god of the underworld - who heard their confession and then judged whether they were fit to enter the afterlife. Anubis was also the keeper of the scales of Maat, on which the deceased's heart was weighed to determine the truth of their confession.
Rather than merely reproduce the inmage of Anubis that appears in Egyptian tomb paintings, Patrick's mask combines diverse graphic elements from those paintings.
