'Thunderbird'

Glenda Mac Naughton (2002)

This original, hand-crafted beaded neckpiece was inspired by the Thunderbird. This gigantic mythical bird is venerated by the indigenous peoples of North-west Canada, including the Haida and the Kwakiutl.

Thunderbird snatches whales from the sea, its glinting eye and wingflaps causing lightening and thunder.

Glenda's timeless Thunderbird combines a mythical figure with traditional beadweaving stiches and modern tubular seed beeds.
