Inspirations and ethics

Self-taught bead-artist and designer Glenda MacNaughton handcrafts each of dax's designs. She strives to bead with social responsibility in mind.

Glenda lives near the coast on the Bellarine Peninsula in Victoria (Australia). She publishes about beadwork and beyond in beading magazines and on dax's blog.

Glenda has growing list of awards for her art beadwork (see below). She now sells her work online and at selected retail outlets (e.g. The Open Drawer, 1158 Toorak Rd, Camberwell 3124 (Mel. Ref 60 C6) Ph: 9889 7227).

Women in diverse cultures have long used shape, pattern and colour in beadwork as a language to talk about things of significance to them and to their culture. Glenda is drawing on this practice to design and handcraft wearable beadart that can talk about things of signficance to her - social justice, respect for diversity and creating a more eco-friendly world.

Her messages of hope, possibility and desire are written through her use of shape, pattern and colour to create designs that escape the ordinary and embrace difference.

Glenda's hope is to create beadwork that is so pleasing and striking that those who wear it and those who see it will talk about it and so the messages of diversity, the environment and social justice that she is writing into her beadwork will also be talked about.

Beading with social responsibility in mind

Contributing to action for change
Ten per cent (10%) of all sales from Glenda's collections are given to a nominated charity acting for social justice and/or taking action for a more eco-friendly planet. The specific charity chosen depends on the messages of diversity, the environment and social justice that she is writing into a collection. Glenda has also donated items to events raising funds for cancer research and to support the work of her local community association.

Eco friendly packaging
Glenda uses eco-friendly packaging that embraces the 3 'r's earth-friendly principles of reuse, recycle, reduce. She reuses bubble wrap that arrives at her house and recycles packaging when shipping items. Small items are packaged in reusable gift bags Glenda creates from eco-felt (made from recycled PET bottles) that are study but lightweight for shipping and larger pieces are packaged in reusable gift boxes made from recycled paper materials.

Fair trade and/or fair employment suppliers
Where possible Glenda sources packaging and other materials from organisations committed to fair trade and/or fair employment practices.

Crafting art beadwork to last
Beadwork is very durable and if cared for properly, it can last for generations. Each piece of dax's hand-woven beadwork has instructions about its care. Glenda generally uses the beautiful and tiny Japanese glass seed beads called Delicas, known for their precision & quality. She weaves the Delicas on specialist beading threads for increased strength & durability.
